Twelve young Architects in
New York were asked by a colleague to revise Giambattista
Nolli's 1748 Plan of Rome. This drawing resulted from that
exercise and is a proposal for the central, most dense and
historically charged area of Rome known as the Campo Marzio.
The floor plans of several buildings constructed within the
Campo over the centuries, were edited and traced onto one
drawing, creating a collage of Rome's Architectural history.
Other buildings from throughout the Empire were added, while
entirely new structures were invented to fill in the remaining
gaps.
The result is a place that still resembles the city in plan,
but is perhaps more recognizable as Rome in a psychical sense
than in any physical reality.
