Located just north of Chicago, this 1-Bedroom Apartment features dramatic, sweeping views of Lincoln Park, Lake Michigan and the downtown skyline.

Project Team: Richard Lucas; Lydia Kiehborth; Scott Sorenson
Custom-built millwork will be hung on the wall of the Dining area, while a full-height custom Media Cabinet will be installed on the opposite wall at the Living Room. A custom side table and low book shelf will be installed between the Dining and Living areas providing additional storage and spatial definition.
The custom millwork, carefully placed furnishings, and an articulated ceiling with various lighting effects provide order and spatial hierarchy to an otherwise typical and rather non-descript single-bedroom apartment layout.
Operable aluminum window blinds are used both as partitions and to conceal shelving on an interior wall. At the windows and below the cantilevered Dining Room wall cabinet, an 8" wide strip of wood flooring will be replaced with a pebble rock garden. Recessed mirrors and back-painted glass are used on cabinet fronts and closet doors.
The rock garden border and a variety of translucent, polished materials work together to blur the physical limits of the space and expand its proportions by bringing in outdoor elements as well as reflecting adjacent walls and the distant skyline beyond.
Demolition work will be limited to the Bathroom area where a hallway linen closet will be incorporated into the Bathroom as a custom built-in cabinet. Other upgrades to the Bathroom include changing out the bathtub for a walk-in shower with a marble feature wall and tiled seating niche, marble flooring throughout, a custom-built vanity and backlit mirrored medicine cabinet, accent cove lighting, and new plumbing fixtures.
